Bible commentaries

The first four of the Ten Command talk about our duty to God. It is adequate. The first command refers only to the subject of worship, JEHOVAH. It is forbidden here to worship any creature, but the command goes beyond that. It is forbidden to love, desire, delight or expect something good from any sinful complacency. This command forbids everything that is not love, gratitude, reverence or perfect worship. Whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. If you are a believer, the Lord is jealous of your love. He cannot stand that something else takes the first place in our lives. If he bought us with his own blood, then He cannot stand that you think you belong to this world. He cannot tolerate anything that stands between Him and the love of our hearts. He is jealous of our trust. He would not let you to trust in this world.
