Joel 1 - Easy To Read Version

Joel son of Pethuel received this message from the Lord:

Leaders, listen to this message!\par Listen to me, all you people\par that live in the land.\par Has anything like this happened before\par during your lifetime? No!\par Did anything like this happen\par during your fathers’ lifetime? No!\par

You will tell these things to your children.\par Your children will tell their children.\par And your grandchildren will tell\par the people of the next generation.\par

What the cutting locust {\cf2\super [1]} has left,\par the swarming locust has eaten.\par And what the swarming locust has left,\par the hopping locust has eaten.\par And what the hopping locust has left,\par the destroying locust {\cf2\super [2]} has eaten!\par

Drunks, wake up and cry!\par All of you people that drink wine, cry.\par Why? Because your sweet wine is finished.\par You won’t get another taste of that wine.\par

A large and powerful nation came\par to attack my country.\par Its soldiers were too many to count.\par Its \{weapons\} were as sharp as a lion’s teeth\par and as powerful as a lion’s jaw.\par

It destroyed my grapevine.\par Its good vines withered and died.\par It destroyed my fig tree,\par stripped off the bark and threw it away.\par

Cry like the young woman\par that was ready to be married,\par and her husband-to-be was killed.\par

Priests, servants of the Lord, cry!\par Why? Because there will be no more\par grain and drink offerings\par in the Lord’s temple. {\cf2\super [3]} \par

The fields are ruined.\par Even the ground is crying.\par Why? Because the grain is destroyed;\par the new wine is dried up,\par and the olive oil is gone.\par

Be sad, farmers!\par Cry loud, grape farmers!\par \{Cry\} for the wheat and for the barley! {\cf2\super [4]} \par Why? Because the harvest in the field is lost.\par

The vines have become dry.\par And the fig tree is dying.\par All the trees in the field—the pomegranate,\par the palm, and the apple—have withered.\par And happiness among the people is dead.\par

Priests, put on your clothes of sadness\par and cry loudly.\par Servants of the altar, {\cf2\super [5]} cry loudly.\par Servants of my God, you will sleep\par in your clothes of sadness.\par Why? Because there will be no more\par grain and drink offerings\par in God’s temple. {\cf2\super [6]} \par

Tell the people that there will be a special time for not eating food. Call the people together for a special meeting. Bring the leaders and all the people that live in the land together. Bring them to the temple {\cf2\super [7]} of the Lord your God, and pray to the Lord.

Be sad! Why? Because the Lord’s special day is near. At that time, punishment will come like an attack from God All-Powerful.

Our food is gone. Joy and happiness are gone from the temple {\cf2\super [8]} of our God.

\{We planted seeds,\} but the seeds became dry and dead lying in the soil. Our plants are dry and dead. Our barns are empty and falling down.

The animals \{are hungry and\} groaning. The herds of cattle wander around, confused. They have no grass to eat. The sheep are dying. {\cf2\super [9]}

Lord, I am calling to you \{for help\}. Fire has changed our green fields into a desert. Flames have burned all the trees in the field.

Wild animals also need your help. The streams are dry—there is no water! Fire has changed our green fields into a desert.
